'I Call This the Tom Hanks Effect': Shelves of Brooklyn Trader Joe's Picked Clean Amid Coronavirus Emergency

Shelves at a Trader Joe’s in Brooklyn were empty on March 12 in what one Instagram user called the “Tom Hanks effect,” suggesting that people were taking COVID-19 seriously after the actor announced he had contracted the virus two days prior.

This footage, shared to Instagram by uploader @grrlgenius_, shows the supply shortage within the store.

“I went to CVS and mine has a food section which was 80% stocked, so clearly Trader Joe’s all over the city is getting hit. But local stores still have things like tea and peanut butter that Trader Joe’s does not,” @grrlgenius_ told Storyful. Credit: grrlgenius_ via Storyful
