Activision announced on Thursday (15 April) that the Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship will be making its return this year with a US$2 million prize pool after last year's tournament was cancelled by the coronavirus pandemic.

The inaugural Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship had a US$750,000 prize pool and was originally set to take place in Los Angeles in December last year before it was cancelled. The event featured eight teams from North America, Latin America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, South Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia.

As with last year's tournament, the 2021 Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship is open to eligible entrants across the world and will be conducted regionally in multiple stages of qualifiers starting in June.

As of the time of writing, three participating regions have been confirmed, namely South Asia and the Middle East, Mainland China, and Southeast Asia.

Players in Southeast Asia, which includes the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan can qualify for the event through the Call of Duty: Mobile Garena qualifier in July.

“The momentum worldwide for Call of Duty: Mobile is incredible as our players continue to have a great time playing. Picking up from last year’s competition, we’ve increased the prize money up for grabs and the number of teams that can qualify, so there are even more reasons for fans to prove they’ve got what it takes to be the best,” Matt Lewis, vice president, mobile at Activision, said in a statement.

Activision has also partnered with Sony to have the latter's latest flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 III, as the official mobile device for the 2021 Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship in order to "provide an 120 FPS gaming experience" for the participating players in the tournament.

Details about the schedule and venue for the 2021 Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship's main event are expected to be revealed in the coming months.
