A failure to limit global warming could mean a “death sentence” for small island nations like the Maldives, including the end of their livelihoods and cultures, the country’s environment minister said Wednesday. Almost all countries signed the 2015 Paris climate accord, aimed at limiting global warming to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above levels in the late 19th century, and ideally no more than 1.5 C (2.7 F). A report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said earlier this year that the world is likely to exceed the 1.5 C increase in the 2030s, earlier than expected.

Portfolio management in decentralized finance (DeFi) remains a highly manual and, at times, costly process, especially on platforms like Uniswap v3 where “concentrated liquidity” means that a user might have their position liquidated entirely to one side of a pair. The Ethereum-based and soon-to-be Cosmos-managed project has raised $23 million in a round led by Polychain Capital, the team announced on Wednesday. The round included participation from Byzantine Ventures, Tendermint Ventures, Secure Ventures, D1 Ventures, Ferngrove Ventures and Alameda Research.

Taiwan tech giant Foxconn is making big plans for its new electric vehicles. The sedan, SUV and bus were unveiled earlier this week. On Wednesday (October 20) Chairman Liu Young-way said the firm was looking at making them in Europe, India and Latin America. He described a Mexico plant as "very possible", but said a factory in Europe would come first. Asked if the firm would work with German car makers, he said that it would, but "indirectly". Foxconn admits that it's a beginner at auto making. But it's been making plans apace. The firm has a joint venture with Stellantis on in-car technology. It's also bought a factory from U.S. startup Lordstown Motors, and acquired its own chip plant. Best known as the maker of Apple's iPhones, Foxconn now wants to diversify away from making gadgets for other brands. Besides making its own, it also aims to become a major supplier of parts and services for EVs.

The Teranet-National Bank Composite House Price Index, which tracks repeat sales of single-family homes in 11 major Canadian markets, rose 0.1% in September from August, marking the fourth consecutive month in which the monthly price increase was lower than the previous month. "The slowdown in price growth can be linked to the slowdown in housing sales reported in recent months by the Canadian Real Estate Association," Daren King, an economist at National Bank of Canada, said in a statement.
Inflation rose to 4.4% in September, beating the average analyst estimate of 4.3%, to reach its fastest clip since February 2003, Statistics Canada data showed. The Bank of Canada expects headline inflation to remain above its 1%-3% control range this year.
