California Paddleboarder Encounters Strange Transparent Creature Off Dana Point

A paddleboarder exploring the waters off Dana Point, California, was not sure what to think when he encountered sea salps for the first time, recently shared footage shows.

Bill Clements uploaded the video of the strange discovery video to his @paddlegoat Instagram account.

In the footage, Clements picks up a string of the gelatinous marine creatures and can be heard wondering about the nature of his finding.

He told Storyful that the bioluminescent creature “appeared to be a single organism, but when I took a closer look it was a chain of organisms all connected to one another. So interesting!” he said.

Despite their appearance, salps, also known as sea squirts, are not related to jellyfish. A notochord running down their backs places them in the family of vertebrate animals. Credit: @paddlegoat via Storyful
