California Kayakers Dumped Into Water by Breaching Humpback Whale

Two kayakers had a close call off Avila Beach, California, on November 2, when they were almost swallowed by a humpback whale.

Julie McSorley was in the kayak with her friend Liz Cottriel. Video recorded by her shows a whale’s fin visible in the distance, before a bait bail of fish suddenly surfaces. A humpback whale soon follows, its gaping jaws toppling the pair from their kayak.

“I saw the big pool of fish, the big bait ball come up out of the water. I saw the whale come up,” McSorley told Fox 26. “I thought, ‘Oh no! It’s too close’.”
