Caldor Fire Smoke Billows Across South Lake Tahoe Highway

Fire crews continued to battle the growing Caldor Fire in northern California on Tuesday, August 31, as the blaze burned 191,607 acres (about 299 square miles) and reached 19 percent containment, fire officials said.

This footage released by Caltrans District 3 shows the fire, “fueled by high winds”, burning along the partially closed Highway 50 east of Echo Summit in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, according to a tweet.

The popular resort city was deserted on Tuesday morning after approximately 22,000 residents evacuated South Lake Tahoe during the weekend, local media reported.

The United States Department of Agriculture on August 22 announced a temporary closure of nine California national forests through September 6 “to better provide public and firefighter safety due to extreme fire conditions throughout northern California,” according to fire officials.
