Byelection set for vacant Summerside council seat
Nominations are in and a date has been selected for a byelection in Summerside.
Elections P.E.I. says the vote to fill the vacant council seat in Ward 5, Hillcrest-Platte River, will happen Monday, Oct. 7.
Six candidates are on the ballot: Gerard Deveau, Ginny Kennedy, Patrick McMahon, Pete Peters, Basil Stewart and Ken Trenhom.
"It is encouraging to see so many candidates register for this byelection, and now I would like to encourage all eligible residents of Ward 5 to vote," Tim Garrity, municipal election officer with Elections P.E.I., said in a news release.
Stewart served as mayor of Summerside from 1985 to 2014, and again from 2018 to 2022.
The byelection comes after Barb Gallant was voted out of council back in June on the grounds she had missed three consecutive council meetings after being charged with a criminal offence in April.
Voting will be at Credit Union Place, with advanced polls on Sept. 28, Oct. 1 and Oct. 4. Polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.
