They were images that shocked the world. When an AFP team became the first journalists to enter the Ukrainian town of Bucha after Russian forces withdrew, they found a nightmare scene: bodies strewn along the town's Yablunska Street, civilians shot seemingly at random. Since then, AFP has returned on multiple occasions to Bucha to establish the identities of the victims, track down their death certificates and interview dozens of witnesses and relatives in a bid to piece together their final moments. The outcome of that investigation tells the backstory of several victims and hears from survivors who fear they will have to live with the trauma of what they witnessed for years to come.
