There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder — do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determined that, in fact, they really do.

On Trial: Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Hybrid Mattress

The Tester: Erica Murphy, a hot sleeper looking for the ultimate cooling mattress

The Brief: My brother has always said to me, “There are two things that are worth spending your money on: shoes and mattresses.” When you think about it, it makes sense. Let’s say that you get an average of 8 hours of sleep per night — that’s 2,900 hours that you’re spending on your mattress every year (not including those weekend Netflix marathons). When mattresses are known to affect the quality of your sleep, it seems like a smart idea to find one that you like.

Brooklyn Bedding’s Aurora Mattress is a mattress worth investing in. When it comes to the design of the mattress, it’s the best of both worlds. It’s a hybrid design, which means that it contains both coils and foam. Basically, you're getting the support that a traditional coil system provides, while also reaping the contouring and comfort benefits that you typically get from foam mattresses.

From top to bottom, the Aurora contains six different layers of materials. The top layer consists of Brooklyn Bedding’s advanced cooling fabric, then comes the second layer of a patented technology called CopperFlex that contours to your body and helps draw away heat. Next are the main foam layers, which are designed to adjust easily with your body when you move and to give you support. The fifth layer contains 1,032 coils, which “allow for better reactivity and motion isolation, minimizing sleep disturbance.” The bottom layer is a foam base, which simply adds durability to the mattress.

The Aurora mattress is labeled as a cooling mattress, and it doesn’t disappoint. It’s made with advanced cooling technology called TitanCool, which consists of gel beads that help you maintain a skin temperature of 88 degrees — the ideal temp for sleep. When I unboxed the mattress, it felt like cool air was seeping out of the box. Upon first touch, the fabric felt cool against my skin, too.

As someone who lives in New York and remembers the bed bug crisis, I always cover my mattress with a protector. To experience the mattress’s cooling properties to the fullest, I recommend finding a breathable mattress protector. I made this mistake with the first cover I put on, and it pretty much negated everything that’s great about having a cooling mattress.

In case you haven’t caught on yet, the Aurora mattress is considered a mattress-in-a-box. This trend has gained major popularity in recent years because you can easily order the product online and don’t have to maneuver a bulky mattress up narrow stairs or cram it into an elevator that’s simply too small. (I’ve done the carry-a-mattress-up-six-flights-of-stairs-thing and let me tell you, it’s not fun.) The box comes with clear instructions on how to unfold the mattress, and because it’s a hybrid, it doesn’t take as long to fluff up. In roughly 10 minutes, my new mattress was out of the box, unfolded, and set up on my bed frame.

As a side sleeper, the hybrid design has been perfect for me. I’ve slept on foam mattresses before and would wake up in the middle of the night with soreness in my shoulder from the material being too firm. The Aurora mattress also comes in three different levels of firmness: soft, medium, and firm. I went with the medium option and haven’t experienced any fatigue in the month or so that I’ve been sleeping on it.

Closing Argument: When you think about all of the time you spend on your mattress, you’ll realize that it truly is a product worth investing in. The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Hybrid will set you back $1,700, but you’ll have the mattress for many years to come. The brand offers a 120-night trial, so you have lots of time to determine if it is the investment for you.
