Power is fully restored for residents in Faro, Yukon
Power has been fully restored in Faro, Yukon, after a broken piece of equipment at the town's diesel plant caused a power outage that began Friday evening.
Yukon Energy is asking residents to continue to limit their electricity usage at this time.
"The power system in Faro is still vulnerable and a large, sudden increase in load could result in another outage," the public utility wrote in its latest Facebook update at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Yukon Energy first posted it was aware of the outage affecting Faro at about 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
Earlier today, power was restored to homes briefly but was lost again. The utility wrote that "re-energizing the system" had been challenging, due to the length of time that the power was be out.
The town had opened a warming centre in the recreation centre, which was running on a backup generator, Yukon Energy wrote on Facebook. Residents were provided with pancakes and coffee this morning.
In an update this morning, Yukon Energy said crews are "working on reconfiguring a few rental diesel generators in Faro," so that the community will have back-up power in the event that another piece of equipment breaks at the diesel plant.
Faro is currently "islanded" from the rest of the grid "due to equipment failure on the system," the utility wrote, so it's been getting its power from a permanent diesel generator at the plant. The community-wide outage was caused when a piece of equipment at the plant broke, Yukon Energy said.
