Broadway's “Swept Away” Cast Reimagines The Avett Brothers' 'A Gift for Melody Anne' in New Music Video (Exclusive)

Performances for the musical begin at the Longacre Theatre in New York City on Tuesday, Oct. 29

Broadway is about to get Swept Away with the new musical featuring tunes from the chart-topping folk-rock band The Avett Brothers, and PEOPLE has a first look at the cast in action.

After sold-out runs in Berkeley, California, and Washington, D.C., the show storms New York City this month, with performances beginning at the Longacre Theatre on Tuesday, Oct. 29, ahead of an official opening on Nov. 19.

Tony winner and Spring Awakening alum John Gallagher Jr. leads the cast, reuniting with his former American Idiot costar Stark Sands for the production. The two will be joined by Wayne Duvall (1984) and Dickinson standout Adrian Blake Enscoe, making his Broadway debut.

All four come together to sing "A Gift for Melody Anne" in a new music video for the number, which PEOPLE can exclusively premiere.

Filmed at Holywater, one of N.Y.C.'s most beloved bars, the clip depicts the foursome embracing the nautical theme of the show while performing their version of The Avett Brothers' song, which first appeared on the band's 2004 album Mignonette.

That album is what producer Matthew Masten looked to adapt when he proposed the idea of the musical in 2014 to the band. Tony-winning writer John Logan, however, wound up pulling songs into the score from five different albums of their band's while penning the musical's book.

The Avett Brothers even wrote a new song, "Lord Lay Your Hand on My Shoulder," for the show.

Like Mignonette, the show is inspired by a real-life story of an 1884 shipwreck off the Cape of Good Hope, which left the four-person crew of the sunken yacht stranded on a lifeboat.

But Swept Away moves the action to New Bedford, Massachusetts, adapting other details of the story to make it original.

Lyrics for The Avett Brothers' songs have also been changed, though "A Gift for Melody Anne" remains in tact.

"And I just want my life to be true / And I just want my song to be true / And I just want my life to be true / I want my soul to feel brand new," they sing in the video.
