Brits Ring Bells on Christmas Eve as Millions Spend Holidays in Lockdown

People across the United Kingdom rang bells on Christmas Eve to help spread festive cheer as millions of people were placed under strict coronavirus restrictions for the holidays.

Britons were encouraged to ring bells from their homes for two minutes at 6 pm, an idea that quickly caught on. A Facebook group used to organize the event attracted almost 500,000 members by Christmas Eve.

“What started as a little idea for the Harrogate Community is starting to spread so thought a group would be a good idea for all communities all over the world to join in,” the organizers wrote.

Parts of England were placed under Tier 4 restrictions as officials attempted to slow the spread of a new coronavirus variant. This footage was shared by Billy Ray Mansell, who said it was filmed in Rochford, Essex. Credit: Billy Ray Mansell via Storyful
