Brentford are asking for “at least £40-45m” for Ivan Toney this summer as transfer expert Fabrizio Romano addresses the Man Utd transfer rumours.
Toney left Newcastle in 2018 to join Peterborough, bagging 49 goals in 94 matches for the Posh, before moving on again to Brentford in 2020.
The 26-year-old helped the Bees to promotion to the Premier League in his first season in London, scoring an impressive 31 goals in 45 Championship appearances.
And he didn’t look out of place last campaign in the Premier League, contributing five assists and 12 goals in 33 games in the top flight, attracting interest from other clubs in the process.
There have been rumours that Man Utd want Toney replace Cristiano Ronaldo with the Portugal international looking to find a way out of Old Trafford this summer.
Newcastle, West Ham and Leeds have all also been linked with the Brentford striker but Romano claims that it will cost any club “at least £40-45m” to sign Toney.
Man Utd have not put an offer in for the Northampton-born striker, while Newcastle are interested but have not yet entered an “advanced negotiation”.
“Despite what you may have read, Manchester United have not submitted any proposals for Ivan Toney so far,” Romano told Caught Offside.
“Newcastle have had contacts in recent weeks but there is still no advanced negotiation. Brentford want at least £40-45m to sell Toney and the situation may evolve in the coming weeks.”
The links to Man Utd were surprising but former Red Devils midfielder Luke Chadwick thinks Toney could offer Erik ten Hag’s side something different this season.
Chadwick told Caught Offside: “It’s a bit of a surprising link, but he’d offer something very different.
“He’s a real handful up front – really adept at holding up the ball and bringing others into play, probably one of the best in the Premier League at doing that. He’s got a great physical presence and United don’t really have someone like that.”
Meanwhile, former Premier League defender Alan Hutton thinks Ten Hag will look to bring in new signings across the whole squad, despite a lot of focus being put on a deal for Frenkie de Jong.
“I think he’ll [ten Hag] always be looking all over the pitch, I think that’s kind of the manager’s job to evaluate the squad and see where you can improve everywhere,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“Obviously [Paul] Pogba has left, can he bring in another midfielder? What formation is he going to play? Is he going to stick with two defensive midfielders when it was Fred and [Scott] McTominay.
“I think we’ll only find out as the weeks go on how he wants to play. We know his style of football is going to be counter-pressing and high energy.
“Has he got the squad to do that? I think he’ll still be evaluating the squad and once he’s done that he can really pick the players that he needs going forward.”
