“Boy Meets World” stars recall 'intense' makeout scene with Jennifer Love Hewitt: 'Wow, that's uncomfortable'
"I don't remember it going that far," star Will Friedle said upon rewatch of his scene with then-girlfriend Hewitt.
Boy Meets World stars are kissing and telling about an "uncomfortable" moment when Jennifer Love Hewitt appeared on the beloved coming-of-age sitcom.
During a recent episode of the Pod Meets World podcast with BMW stars Will Friedle, Rider Strong, and Danielle Fishel, the trio was recapping the infamous season 5 episode “And Then There Was Shawn” when the topic of Friedle's "super intense" makeout session with then-girlfriend Hewitt came up.
In the episode, which is a parody of various slasher films, the cast — including Friedle's Eric Matthews, Fishel's Topanga Lawrence, and Strong's Shawn Hunter — is stalked by an unknown killer after being trapped in the school during detention. At one point, the I Know What You Did Last Summer star — playing a new girl in school named Jennifer Love Fefferman — runs into Eric, who starts intensely kissing her.
Although the episode's plot is eventually revealed to be a dream, in hindsight, Friedle, Strong, and Fishel agreed the moment with Hewitt made no sense and was a bit too hot to handle, even though everyone on set knew the actors were seeing each other at the time.
"[It was] way intense," Fishel recalled of the scene between Friedle and guest star, who briefly dated in 1996. "I don't know how even, like, how none of us thought, 'We know that they are a couple in real life, but does that still make [sense] as far as the show?'"
For his part, Friedle said watching the moment again for the podcast took him by surprise. "I don't remember it going that far, where I was like, 'Oh my god,'" he said. "And then also just like kissing her neck and all that kind of stuff. It was seriously, like, wow, that's uncomfortable."
The trio surmised that the decision to have the scene in the show was purely for the laughs, but they all agreed it ultimately felt inappropriate because most of the audience likely had no idea the actors had an off-camera relationship.
"It was super intense," Friedle continued. "And I've had people even say to me, like, 'Oh, when I was a kid, I didn't realize you guys were together.' So it was just like, what the hell is going on?"
The kissing sesh ended up being the steamiest moment on the show during its entire run. "It's like full-on making out," Friedle said. "That is the most intense makeout we have on the seven years of the show, is right there in the hallway, then me kissing her neck while she's trying to talk and all this. Like, we haven't even said our names yet. It's intense."
