Bournemouth are ready to step up their hunt for a permanent replacement for Scott Parker and have seemingly decided against handing Gary O’Neil the permanent job with an appointment from overseas in the works, TEAMtalk can reveal.
O’Neil has been in interim charge since Scott Parker was fired in the wake of a 9-0 hammering at Liverpool in August. And the caretaker boss has largely done an impressive job, remaining unbeaten in his first six matches.
At one stage, that saw the Cherries nestled nicely in the mid-table positions, leading to calls that O’Neil should get the job permanently.
However, results have taken a turn in recent weeks. And Saturday’s 4-3 defeat at Leeds means they have now lost their last four games. Indeed, the loss at Elland Road means Bournemouth are the first two in Premier League history to blow a two-goal lead in games to lose in successive weeks.
Having been 3-1 up at Leeds and then 2-0 up at home to Tottenham, losing that one 3-2, has seen Bournemouth slip to 17th.
Now we can reveal that the Cherries are upping their hunt for a permanent successor for Parker after deciding against O’Neil’s permanent appointment.
However, that does not mean that he will be out of work for long.
And TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey can reveal that an immediate return to management at Luton is a strong possibility.
Luton considering Gary O’Neil approach
“Luton have accepted that Nathan Jones is going,” Bailey told TEAMtalk. “They have know since last week he was very much on Southampton’s list. Southampton did look abroad and River Plate’s Marcelo Gallardio was one they looked at.
“But they have settled on Jones and he is the man trusted to steer Saints away from relegation danger.”
Jones has done a magnificent job since returning to Kenilworth Road. He steered the Hatters into the play-offs last season, and while they fell short, their efforts were warmly applauded.
And the club are well placed again this time around, meaning it was no surprise to see Jones headhunted.
And with Luton’s hunt for a successor already underway, TEAMtalk can reveal that O’Neil is under consideration.
“Now Luton are already searching and I am told one name they like a lot if Gary O’Neil. He has performed admirably with Bournemouth, but they are looking elsewhere. Sources are telling us that their new owners are set to go with a foreign name.
“That will mean O’Neil is set to be available in the next week or so. And I am told that Luton like him a lot.”
