The Prime Minister has pledged to relocate entire government departments to “great northern cities” where he will be encouraging ministers to work as part of a major civil service shake-up.

Doubling down on his pledge to “level-up” the country, Boris Johnson vowed to relocate around a quarter of the 92,000 civil servants who work in London to the region by 2030.

“We will move departments of state, ministers, private offices and all to great northern cities and regions that represent the future of society,” Mr Johnson told the Great Northern Conference on Thursday.

The Treasury has announced plans to launch an “economic campus” in the North.

“It cannot be enough simply to get through this crisis, we must build back better, build back stronger, build back faster,” Mr Johnson added.
