Bolt of Lightning Seen in La Palma Volcano Ash Cloud

A bolt of lightning was seen flashing through the ash cloud above the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma on October 30.

This video was released by Spain’s National Geographic Institute, which described the phenomenon as “volcanic lightning”. Volcanic lightning can occur when particles ejected by the volcano become electrically charged through friction.

Spanish authorities reported that a magnitude-5 earthquake shook the island on October 31, as lava continued to pour from the volcano.

By October 31, lava had claimed some 975 hectares on the island, according to the European Union’s Copernicus satellite program. Analyzing imagery, scientists with Copernicus determined that 2,574 buildings on La Palma have been destroyed since eruptions began on September 19. Credit: IGN-CNIG via Storyful
