Bindi Irwin announces social media break 3 months after giving birth: 'Mental health deserves more understanding'

Bindi Irwin announced a break from social media three months after giving birth to daughter Grace Warrior, sharing "I need some time to focus on the happiness that is my family."

The 22-year-old conservationist took to her Instagram to share the news alongside a photo of her and Grace, who she shares with husband Chandler Powell. "Just a note to say thank you for your support. I’m taking a break from social media and most of my work in the public eye for a month to be with my beautiful daughter and my wonderful family," she wrote, adding that she's "tremendously grateful to share our life and conservation work with you."

The new mom went on to share that she's recently had conversations with people about the ways that they've gone about protecting their mental health. Now, she's looking to do the same with the short break.

"To my friends who are dealing with depression, anxiety and other battles every day - I see you. These issues are very real and deserve to be discussed and addressed," the post reads. "Surround yourself with the light of people who genuinely care about you and will support you during the good times and the hard times."

The vulnerable post isn't the first for Irwin, who often shares intimate family moments with the public. She even opened up about a rift with her paternal grandfather Bob in a Facebook comment on Father's Day. Still, being so honest about mental health and taking a step away from the spotlight is something she hasn't done before.

"Mental health deserves more understanding and support instead of being dismissed or patronised," she wrote. "You are absolutely worthy of love and kindness."
