Biden: COVID-19 surge means 'challenging' weeks ahead

"We're going to see, as you all have been hearing, a continued rise in cases," Biden said at a meeting of the White House coronavirus response task force.

And the president stressed that the safest way to confront the current surge was for Americans to get vaccinated against the illness, and seek out booster shots.

"So please, please, please get vaccinated now," he said.

The remarks come a day after a Reuters tally showed the U.S. notched nearly a million new cases on Monday, a single-day record nearly double the previous high set last week.

"These coming weeks are going to be challenging," Biden said.

"We're going to get through this. We're going to get through it together."
