Slippin' Jimmy McGill's transformation into Saul Goodman is almost complete, with the final season of Better Call Saul now officially confirmed.

Ahead of season five's premiere next month, the Breaking Bad spin-off – with its similar cult status – has announced that it will be ending the series with season six.

It's not all bad news though, because it's also been announced that the one and only Hank Schrader, aka Dean Norris, will be guest starring in the AMC series this year.

In a statement, the prequel's showrunner Peter Gould said that working on Better Call Saul had been a "dream come true", and promised fans that he and Vince Gilligan would do everything they could "to stick the landing" when work on season six begins.

"From day one of Better Call Saul, my dream was to tell the complete story of our complicated and compromised hero, Jimmy McGill – now AMC and Sony are making that dream come true," Gould said.

"We couldn't be more grateful to the fans and critics who are making this journey possible. Next month, we start work on the sixth and final season – we're going to do our damnedest to stick the landing."

Bob Odenkirk's final brilliant turn as the slippery Albuquerque lawyer is expected to air in 2021. The sixth and final season will have 13 episodes, up three from its usual 10.

Before we learn about Jimmy's final destination as Saul (and hopefully get an update on Gene), there's season five to get through, which will see Jimmy's decision to practise law as 'Saul Goodman' "create unexpected and profound waves of change for those in his orbit".

While the official description for Better Call Saul's season five points at heartbreak for fans of Rhea Seehorn's Kim Wexler, there's also the return of Norris' DEA agent Hank to look forward to, as the actor guest stars in two episodes.

He'll be reunited with his partner Steven Gomez, with Steven Michael Quezada also back for this season, while the late Robert Forster will reprise his role as The Disappearer (in scenes filmed during shooting for last year's Breaking Bad movie El Camino).

Better Call Saul season 5 will premiere on February 23, 2020 on AMC in the US. It airs a day later on Netflix in the UK.
