You might have seen frightening Black Friday footage of a grown woman wrestling a TV from a child in Minnesota and thought it wasn't your cup of tea, but there are plenty of non-violent ways to get a good deal.

Obviously we're going to lay it all out below for you, but first we must stress the importance of – you guessed it – shopping online. Frankly, while we miss the aromas of overpriced candles in designer stores, or the crisp paper bags that come with even the most entry-level of purchases, we don't miss the crowds or the potential to catch a deadly illness. So, yes, while it's no longer illegal to shop IRL, we wouldn't even toy with the idea of heading to the shops on 26 November. Stay safe chilled and shop at home.

What should I buy on Black Friday?

Since last year's festivities were a little lacklustre, to say the least, we'll be stockpiling party clothes this year (velvet blazers and bow ties, the works). If you've got any gaps in your staple wardrobe, however, now is the time to buy. Luxury big dogs such as Selfridges, SSENSE, Browns, END Clothing and Harvey Nichols have been known to knock as much as 70 per cent off menswear on Black Friday. The same goes for high street stores such as COS and AllSaints.

Which brands take part in Black Friday?

Not many are blessed with enough commercial discernment as to skip Black Friday altogether. However, there are some high-end labels that choose to rise above it, which is why you'll notice their absence in luxury department store's line ups. In general, high street stores are expected to play ball, but this year Arket has confirmed it will not take part in Black Friday, for sustainability reasons.

The pandemic has hit fashion hard, with stores closing and sartorial men stuck at home in spenny tracksuits reluctant to make big purchases, so whether that means Black Friday discounts will better or worse is yet to be seen. Here's a list of the retailers taking part in Black Friday 2020:

Black Friday designer men's fashion deals:

Selfridges

Though not technically a 'Black Friday' sale, the London luxury retailer dropped its annual 'Christmas Come Early' event a whole two weeks earlier this year (probably due to the current Covid situation).

You can get 10 per cent off selected grooming and tech, as well as up to 20 per cent off menswear when using the code 'SELFCCE' at checkout.

Mr. Porter

Its big sister Net-a-porter may have launched a massive Black Friday in 2019, but the e-tailer decided to bow out of the event for the first time, channeling its efforts into a massive Boxing Day sale instead.

Good news: Black Friday is back for 2020. We so hoped Mr Porter would do a 360 on us.

Farfetch

There's currently up to 50 per cent off selected lines, plus an extra 20 off that once you hit checkout, at Farfetch. No fancy promo code, no minimum spend, just a good old-fashioned red tag sale. You'll have some serious scrolling to do, though, so we rounded up the best bits here.

LuisaViaRoma

LuisaViaRoma's Black Friday sale is one of the best we've seen out there: 40 per cent off selected new-season items. Anything tagged up with a star isn't included; but we can promise you it's not just the runts of the litter, lingering un-sold at the end of the season, eligible for the discount. There are some seriously covetable items to be snapped up – just type the code 'BF40' in at the checkout.

END. Clothing

This year, END has dropped a blanket discount of 20 per cent off everything on the site (beware: some brands are excluded, the usual culprits as you can imagine). These are the best kind of deals, if you ask us, because there's a chance to get new-season items at their cheapest. This reduction is applied automatically once you reach the checkout.

The brand is a big fan of full-price promos, but it also has a decent clearance sale available pretty much all year round. On Black Friday, it's even better thanks to the extra discount – so if the new-season reductions aren't quite doing it for you, you're bound to find bargains at up to 70 per cent off in there. Be warned: you need to be prepared to get down and dirty with a hefty scroll through countless (slow-loading) sale pages. Do yourself a favour and shop our edit instead:

SSENSE

Last year, the Canadian fashion retailer went early and it went big, with up to 50 per cent off more than 50,000 items. Things are looking just as good, if not better, for 2020. Here's Esquire's pick of the best bits.

Flannels

Flannels is giving customers a £100 voucher when they spend over £500, with the maximum credit available being £200 (so, spend over a grand and you'll get nothing but a diminished bank balance). Just to clarify, this is not a 20 per cent off/minimum spend situation, the voucher is eligible for 'future' purchases only. Confusing, eh?

Antler

We get it, you might not be in the market for new luggage right about now. But, summer 2021 could still be a biggie if all goes to plan – which means, holiday prep starts now (come on, there's not much else to do at the moment).

For Black Friday 2020, the brand is knocking 15 per cent off everything on site and dropping different deals spanning two weeks. There's currently 30 per cent off its coveted Camber cases.

Armani Exchange

As an offshoot from the Giorgio Armani we all know and love, Armani Exchange is offering up to a massive 30 per cent off on its youth-driven collection. Lots of bomber jackets, lots of hoodies, lots and jackets – all things we like a lot.

Black Friday high street men's fashion deals:

Topman

Topman dropped a site-wide discount of 25 per cent off today. That includes big brands, too.

ASOS

ASOS is reducing absolutely everything on its site by up to 70 per cent for Black Friday.

Arket

For the past two years, Arket has done Black Friday a little differently. The Scandi brand's convoluted methods involved discounting different coloured items every day of the week (blue Monday, green Tuesday, white on Wednesday, you get the gist) with all the black items saved 'til, you guessed it, Friday. If you wanted to nab the best bits, you had to hedge your bets and wait it out, or make multiple orders – not the best for your carbon footprint.

Anyway, the brand has decided to sit this one out for 2020: it has confirmed that it will not partake in Black Friday for sustainability reasons.

AllSaints

AllSaints has always been a fan of Black Friday: the retailer has offered up a generous 30 per cent blanket discount for the past three years. And 2020 is no different. The store kickstarted its sales early, so customers could browse to their heart's content for two weeks straight (the sale ends on Cyber Monday).

Amazon

Not your normal fashion go-to, but the Black Friday daddy does big discounts on everything from staples to luggage to watches. The retailer had to move its big Prime Day sale from July to October due to lockdown, but it's still come through with some strong Black Friday discounts this November. There's up to 70 per cent off men's fashion, watches and footwear from the likes of Carhartt, Puma and Nike.

Men's sportswear Black Friday deals:

Nike

The biggest name in sportswear also has one of the biggest sales, and it's upped the game for 2020. Last year, the retailer gave us 20 per cent off and now its offering 25 per cent reductions on everything (that includes full price and clearance items). Just enter the code 'SHINE2020' at the checkout. We've pulled out our favourite bits here.

What is Black Friday?

Black Friday and sibling holiday Cyber Monday have gathered momentum, travelling across the pond to the UK in the last decade. The festival of capitalism began when bored and turkey-filled Americans ventured out after Thanksgiving to spend their holiday shopping, rather than with their loved ones. It's now the biggest retail day of the year, overtaking Boxing Day as the ultimate sales event – makes sense, really, since by 26 December we're all skint and slumped in a post-Christmas food coma.

When is Black Friday 2020?

Determined by Thanksgiving dates in the US, Black Friday always falls on the fourth weekend of November which, this year, is the 27th. Unlike flash tech deals, fashion sales are likely to last longer than one day, probably through the weekend and until midnight on Cyber Monday.
