Beruas MP Ngeh Koo Ham ‘forgives’ those who torched his cars and home, even as Malaysian Cabinet slams attack

The Malaysian Cabinet has slammed the Molotov cocktail attack against DAP’s Beruas MP, Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham, that damaged the lawmaker’s home in Ayer Tawar, Manjung, and his three vehicles, early this morning.

“The attack was raised during the Cabinet meeting today and the Cabinet condemns the act,” said Communications Minister Ahmad Fahmi Mohamed Fadzil, this afternoon.

“The Cabinet would like to remind the public to act in accordance with the law and to not resort to committing acts that would fuel sentiments.

“The Cabinet also said that stern action will be taken against those who break the law.”

Ngeh, in a press conference this afternoon, believes that the attack could have been due to his Dec 28 statement that hogged the limelight. He had then suggested that non-Muslim constitutional experts be appointed to the committee reviewing the jurisdiction of Syariah Courts, according to the Federal Constitution.

Ngeh came under fire by several quarters for suggesting that, prompting DAP to say that the statement was a “mistake”. Ngeh later apologised and retracted his statement.

At today’s press conference, Ngeh said that he forgave “those who had wanted to burn my cars, my house, and even harm my family, if they had been misled by falsehoods, and instigated by others into committing hatred and violence”.

Perak police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said Ngeh contacted Manjung police at 2.55am to inform them of the incident. The case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code (mischief by fire).
