Marvel's Benedict Cumberbatch and Academy Award winner Jodie Foster star in the first trailer for upcoming legal drama The Mauritanian, and the former is showing off his best Southern accent.

Based on a New York Times best-selling memoir from 2015, the film – which is due to be released early next year – centres on Mohamedou Ould Slahi (Mary Magdalene's Tahar Rahim), a man accused of being "the head recruiter for 9/11".

Having been kept in Guantanamo Bay detention camp for years without being officially charged, he finds allies in defence lawyer Nancy Hollander (Foster) and her associate Teri Duncan.

Together, the trio face countless obstacles as they attempt to seek justice.

"Since when did we start locking people up without a trial in this country?" Hollander asks in the newly released teaser.

Cumberbatch plays Lt Colonel Stuart Couch, a formidable military prosecutor who stumbles across some evidence that threatens to – and eventually does, along with what Nancy and Teri discover – expose "a shocking and far-reaching conspiracy".

Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland, State of Play) directs, while Big Little Lies' Shailene Woodley, Saamer Usmani (What/If) and Shazam! actor Zachary Levi also star, while Cumberbatch is also on board as a producer.

The Mauritanian is set to be released in the UK on February 26, 2021.
