Beijing residents watch party anniversary flyover

China's President Xi Jinping on Thursday (July 1) hailed a "new world" created by the Chinese people as the party marked the centenary of its founding.

Some congregated by an ancient canal now overshadowed by the skyscrapers of the financial district, to watch helicopters fly over spelling out "100" in the sky.

Once the jets and helicopters had disappeared west into the distance towards Tiananmen Square, where President Xi was about to begin his speech, a group of onlookers, laughing, broke into a revolutionary song, while some sat on benches watching the ceremony on their screens.
