The organizers of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics held a ceremony on Thursday February 4 to mark one year until the Games begin.

During the ceremony the Olympic torch was officially unveiled as Beijing showed it was ready to become the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

From the International Olympic Committee headquarters in Lausanne, IOC President Thomas Bach said preparations were going well and Beijing would write history by using the legacy of the 2008 Summer Games to help host the 2022 Winter Games.

Organizers promise a "joyful rendezvous upon pure ice and snow" that will kick off on Feb. 4, 2022. Artificial powder will likely be needed to help cover the slopes carved out on the brown, arid mountains to Beijing's northwest.
