Beachgoers 'Packed in Like Sardines' as High Temperatures Hit England

Bournemouth City Council declared a “major incident” on June 25, saying local services were being overwhelmed by thousands of people flocking to beaches in defiance of advice to stay away.

Video showed a packed Bournemouth Beach on Wednesday, June 24, with the beach left strewn with rubbish after crowds left. Tuesday was the warmest day of 2020, the Met Office said with a temperature of 32.6 degrees Celsius (90 Fahrenheit) recorded at Heathrow Airport. Similar conditions were expected to last through Friday.

Local council leader Vikki Slade appealed for people to stay away, while Assistant Chief Constable Sam de Reya, of Dorset Police, said: “These are unprecedented times and we are urging people to stay away from the area of Bournemouth Beach and other Dorset beaches." Credit: Peter Ryan via Storyful
