Barbie Hsu denies involvement in support for HK security law

2 Jun – Barbie Hsu has recently denied being part of the group of celebrities who were listed in the petition backing Hong Kong national security law.

As reported on Epoch Times, earlier it was revealed that more than 2,000 celebrities including movie stars Jackie Chan, Eric Tsang and Kara Hui had released a joint statement to support the said plan made by Beijing that many Hong Kong independence supporters believe will suppress the freedom they have been enjoying in past decades.

However, netizens who read the list immediately noticed the name Hsu Hsi-yuan, which is the Chinese name of Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu (also known by the moniker Da S). It has since angered the fans, who accused the actress of being pro-China.

In response, the "Meteor Garden" actress denied that she was involved in the petition, saying that it could have been someone with the same name and surname.

"We are currently busy preparing for my daughter's education. I have not received any invitation or notice to participate in the joint-statement," she said.

Nonetheless, some are still expressing scepticism over her explanation, saying that there was no celebrity with the same name in Hong Kong. The actress' social media accounts are now being flooded with hate comments from pro-independence supporters.
