It's been two long years since police detective Julien Baptiste made his debut in the BBC's hit crime thriller, Baptiste, and we've been waiting patiently for series 2 ever since. Well, congratulations guys because we made it. Not only is the second instalment actually happening but it's coming soon. Here's everything we know about Baptiste series 2.
What's going to happen in Baptiste season 2?
The first exciting thing to note about Baptiste S2 is that this season we're joined by BBC royalty, Fiona Shaw. As in, Killing Eve's own Carolyn Martens. Shaw plays British Ambassador Emma Chambers whose family mysteriously disappears, prompting the authorities to call in the missing persons expert, Julien Baptiste.
The official BBC synopsis reads:
"When British Ambassador Emma Chambers’ (Fiona Shaw) whole family disappears whilst on holiday in the Hungarian mountains, Baptiste immerses himself into Emma’s world, committed to finding her husband and two sons. However, when the case turns into something far more brutal and desperate, Julien must navigate a Hungarian police force he doesn’t trust and unrelenting media who are hungry for information on such a high-profile international case. Julien must remain rational in the face of chaos in order to find Emma’s family. Will he be able to solve his most complex case yet?"
The show was always a spin-off of The Missing franchise, which started back in 2014, starring James Nesbitt and Frances O'Connor as the parents of a child who goes missing while on a family holiday in France. Each series of The Missing had a different storyline, so it would make sense if Baptiste completely moved on from last season's plot.
Do we have a Baptiste season 2 trailer?
Yes! And wow it looks jam packed with drama. Really, they only needed to show that brief clip of Fiona Shaw at the beginning and we were sold.
Who has been cast in Baptiste season 2?
Obviously, the man himself Tchéky Karyo, aka Julien Baptiste will return to his lead role accompanied by Fiona Shaw as Emma Chambers (have I mentioned that already?)
One thing we don't know, is whether Baptiste's son Niels (Boris Van Severen) might make a surprise comeback. At the end of last season he turned out to be Baptiste's son and a corrupt officer, and accidentally shot his own mother. It feels like a pretty major character to miss out, but so far both The Missing and Baptiste seem to work independently each series, with just Julien as the only constant.
When is Baptiste season 2 release date?
There was a gap of two years between the first and second series of The Missing, and between that and the first series of Baptiste, so we always did expect a couple of years wait. Plus, there's been a pandemic on, so if anything we should be pleased we're pretty much on track!
The good news is that the wait is over. Baptiste series 2 will land on BBC one on Sunday 18th July at 9pm. So soon!
