The Universiti Malaya Medical Society is organising a charity concert called ‘Ballads of Hope’ as part of its Eradicate AIDS and Stigma for Equality (ERASE) Initiative on March 9.

The event, which will begin at 7pm, will be held at the Experimental Theatre on the main campus of Universiti Malaya in Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur.

ERASE is a medical student-led initiative by Universiti Malaya’s Faculty of Medicine, and is to raise funds for treatment and the social welfare needs for low-income HIV-positive patients at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.

Headlining the concert is renowned artist Nikki Palikat. Joining her on stage are up-and-coming talent Ranisha Faizul, and the harmonious voices of the KL Men’s Chorus.

Malaysian AIDS Council president, Associate Professor Dr Raja Iskandar Shah Raja Azwa, an infectious diseases consultant at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre, said the objectives are also to raise awareness among the youth, and the public at large, of the latest scientific advancements in the field of HIV treatment, and to challenge myths and misconceptions about HIV.

“We must frame HIV as a health issue, not a moral one, and raise awareness of treatment successes, as well as patient wellbeing, and prevention,” he said.

“This initiative serves as an educational platform, and extends its influence by mobilising efforts to raise essential funds for the cause.”

He added that ERASE goes beyond conventional learning methods, sensitising university students to the harsh realities of stigma and discrimination faced by people living with HIV.

“It also acts as a catalyst for reflection and self-improvement, fostering leadership qualities and cultivating a spirit of volunteerism among our future leaders,” Dr Iskandar added.

Tickets for the ‘Ballads of Hope’ concert are RM35 for Universiti Malaya students, RM40 for other students, and RM50 for general admission.
