Bafta nominations 2023 – live: Film world reacts to awards announcement

The Bafta nominations have been announced in London.

The nominees were revealed by Hayley Atwell and Ted Lasso actor Toheeb Jimoh during a live press conference at 12pm on Thursday (19 January).

This year’s Baftas, which are taking place in the UK’s capital city on 19 February, will be presented by Richard E Grant and Alison Hammond, three weeks before the Oscars.

Films in contention include current favourites The Banhees of Inisherin, Everything Everywhere All at Once and Cate Blanchett film Tár.

Netflix’s German-language war film All Quiet on the Western Front, though, surpassed the favourites to become the most-nominated film.

Actors that were named included Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Austin Butler (Elvis), Brendan Fraser (The Whale) and Banshees of Inisherin stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.

Follow along with all the live updates, as the nominations were announced, below

As mentioned before, Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans was largely ommitted from the longlist, so its snub from the main categories isn’t too surprising.

However, just one nomination for an Oscar frontrunner is certainly unprecedented.

Over the afternoon, we will be sharing reactions from certain nominees as they roll in.

First up, we have Sara Dosa, the director of National Geographic’s acclaimed documentary Fire of Love, which follows a married couple who spent their lives photographing volcanoes.

It is an incredible privilege to be recognised by BAFTA and receive a nomination for Fire of Love. Katia and Maurice Kraffts’ footage and legacy were sources of profound inspiration and I feel so honored and grateful to have gotten to tell their story. It was a labor of love to make this film in such a collaborative way with my wonderful team as we always looked to the Kraffts as our North Star. I’m so happy that the joy and awe we had making Fire of Love has resonated.

We are moments away from finding out which films have been nominated the 2023 Baftas.

Now’s the time to start a prayer circle for your favourite films from the last year!

11:50 , Jacob Stolworthy

Let’s quickly namecheck one film whose campaign appears to have sadly run of steam: Sarah Polley’s Women Talking.

The powerful film, starring Rooney Mara, Jessie Buckley and Claire Foy, is deserving of the top prize.

It’s (finally) released in the UK on 10 February, and we included it in our film preview of 2023.

There’s only 15 minutes to go until the nominations are announced – we will be putting each category here as soon as they’re in, so don’t go anywhere.

One surprise film that was omitted from the Bafta longlists in several of the main categories was The Fabelmans, which is an Oscar frontrunner following its victory at the Golden Globes earlier this month.

Will this hurt the biographical Steven Spielberg film’s Oscar chances? Time will most certainly tell.

It’s a good time to highlight the Rising Star nominees, who were announced earlier this week.

Let’s just say: it was a good day to be a Sex Education star.

Previous winners include James McAvoy, Eva Green, Tom Hardy, Kristen Stewart, Tom Holland and Letitia Wright.

In 2022, the award was won by Lashana Lynch.

It really seems as if Tár star Cate Blanchett is the one to beat for Best Actress this year, so a nomination would hardly be surprising. It would be her seventh (seventh!) nomination., with the first arriving in 1999 for Elizabeth.

Fierce competition, though, is expected to manifest in the form of Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Acting wise, it’s being expected that Best Actor is a two=horse race between Banshees actor Colin Farrell and Brendan Fraser’s comeback performance in The Whale.

Should they get nominated today, it will be each actor’s first ever Bafta nomination.

The films to have dominated the 2023 awards season so far include Martin McDonagh’sThe Banhees of Inisherin, Tár, starring Cate Blanchett and sleeper hit Everything Everywhere All at Once.

They all featured onn Bafta’s longlist compiling all the possible films that will be nominated. But will they be named later?
