Bad Boys for Life, the third instalment in the Bad Boys film franchise, is finally here after a 17-year wait.

But before Bad Boys was back on the big screen the franchise had been resurrected for television, with spin-off LA's Finest airing on Spectrum.

The series follows Bad Boys II character Sydney Burnett (Gabrielle Union), the sister of Martin Lawrence's Marcus Burnett.

With Sydney being the bridge between the TV series and the films, many expected her to make an appearance in Bad Boys for Life – but the crossover didn't materialise.

Explaining why there's no Sydney in the film, Spectrum's head of originals Katherine Pope told The Wrap: "There were talks, because Jerry Bruckheimer and Doug Belgrad, who produce the movie, also produce LA's Finest. It honestly was logistics.

"When we picked up LA's Finest, Bad Boys [For Life] was already, I think, it was days away from shooting. So it was all so last minute and we tried to make it work and just logistically we couldn't."

Bad Boys For Life directors Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi also explained that including Sydney in the film would have taken too much away from the main story.

"There was some talk about it, but the thing is, at the end of the day the story was so tight basically that there was no real room for it [that storyline]," the duo said.

"We probably would have ended up having to cut it, and we didn't want to do that. So, eventually we just decided to focus on the main story."

But there is hope that we could see Union as Sydney on the big screen again, as Bad Boys for Life appears to set up a fourth movie.

And if Martin Lawrence and Will Smith ever feel like coming back to the small screen, LA's Finest has been renewed for a second season.

LA's Finest is available to stream on Spectrum in the US. Bad Boys for Life is in cinemas now.
