Schools across England are starting to reopen this week for pupils in Reception, Year One and Year Six. Or at least, that was the Government’s hope.
But the plans to get children back into the classroom have been met with staunch opposition from teacher unions who say that reopening schools now is “reckless”. Over 50 councils have also stated their opposition to the plans and have either advised schools under their control against opening or said they would back headteachers who choose not to. Even for schools that are open, it is up to parents to decide whether to send their children back.
For pupils returning to school this week, it will be very different to the school they left ten weeks ago: they may be greeted with temperature checks at the school gates and told to go home if their temperature is above 38 degrees.
Some secondary school pupils are allowed to return to their classrooms from June 15, when students in Years 10 and 12 will return on a limited basis. It is not clear yet when other children will return and any attempt to bring them back to their classrooms over the summer holiday may be resisted by teaching unions.
