Baby Gibbon Born in Oakland Zoo
A 12-year-old white-handed gibbon at the Oakland Zoo in California gave birth to her first baby on Sunday, May 28, zoo officials said on Wednesday.
Mother Mei and father Rainier mated for life after a four-year courtship — as is customary in primates of this species — and have now become first-time parents, the zoo said. Mei has immediately taken to motherhood, according to the zoo. This footage shows her holding her baby close and nursing it.
The baby will be named once its gender is confirmed, the zoo said. Credit: Oakland Zoo via Storyful
