Awie to be called by the police for SOP violations

10 May – After Neelofa and Siti Nurhaliza, it was revealed that rock star Awie is now the latest to be investigated for a possible violation of COVID-19 standard operating procedures (SOP).

The news was confirmed by the head of the Melaka Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ), Assistant Commissioner Mohd Sukri Kaman, who stated that the singer will be one of the individuals that will be called to testify regarding a recent event that he attended.

Sukri explained that the police received a report at 12.43am on 8 May regarding an alleged SOP violation while the "Kampong Pisang" actor was carrying out a humanitarian mission at a hotel in Jalan Hang Tuah, Melaka.

In a video that had since gone viral, the singer could be seen doing a performance with several individuals with no face mask on.

"All those involved in this case, including the organiser of the programme, will be called to the Melaka Tengah District Police Headquarters (IPD) to testify. The investigation will be completed immediately and will be referred to the Office of the State Director of Prosecution for any decision," he added.

The case is being investigated in accordance with Section 21A of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 and Regulation 18, Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Control of Rehabilitation Movement) Regulations No. 3, 2021.

"Melaka Police also advised the public to always comply with the SOPs of the Rehabilitation Movement Control Order (PKPP) and failure to do so will lead to a legal action," he said.

On the other hand, Awie's manager has admitted to the violation, adding that they have already paid the fine.

He explained that the singer had not wanted to sing, but was crowded by the people in attendance after they played a music video.
