A cause of death has been revealed for Stanley Kotowski, the Massachusetts man who was found dead 10 days after he disappeared in South Carolina.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Aug. 27, authorities confirmed Kotowski, 60, was the individual found dead on Monday, Aug. 26, underneath townhomes at the Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island.

Authorities said a security officer with the Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island was searching the villas on Monday when he noticed a foul odor and flies near one of the buildings and contacted the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office,

Kotowski’s body was later found in a small crawl space underneath two townhomes about 150 to 200 yards from where he was last seen on video, according to Sheriff P.J. Tanner.

County Coroner David Ott said an autopsy conducted Tuesday determined Kotowski died by suicide, and his cause of death was asphyxiation by hanging.

Kotowski was last seen leaving his family’s vacation home in the South Sea Pines Drive area around 10:30 a.m. local time on Friday, Aug. 16, in home surveillance footage previously shared by the BCSO.

The Mass. man, who was barefoot when he was last seen, is believed to have died the same day he disappeared, though the time of his death remains undetermined, according to Tanner.

The area where Kotowski was found is “very secluded” and and Tanner told reporters that he understood how the area "could be overlooked."

In a previous press release, the BCSO said Kotowski departed without his cell phone or wallet.

The victim’s wife, Jackie Kotowski, previously told ABC affiliate WJCL that her husband “just walked out the door” and never returned.

“His anxiety just kept getting worse and worse and worse, and he started to get a little paranoid,” Jackie explained at the time.  She said her husband experienced “really bad insomnia for about a month” before his disappearance, but said he did not have dementia.

Kotowski was missing for 10 days before his body was discovered underneath the nearby home. He was found in the same clothing he was wearing when he disappeared, Ott said.

A BCSO report states Jackie told deputies that her husband was worried that the resort had “set up” a conspiracy, and believed people there were out to get him, according to WJCL.

Jackie also allegedly said her husband mentioned people were “watching him” several times, and even told her, “Promise me you will go on without me.”
