Authorities Begin Repairs to Sao Paulo Highway Washed Out by Heavy Rains

Crews from the Sao Paulo Roads Department began work to repair a damaged highway on Tuesday, February 21, following floods and landslides that killed at least 40 people and left a further 1,730 displaced.

The work was to include repairs to the road’s surface, retaining walls, and drainage system, and was expected to take up to six months to complete, the Sao Paulo government said. The road was closed in both directions as of Tuesday.

The flooding hit the north coast of Sao Paulo state on Saturday night and continued into Sunday, according to local news reports. The National Civil Defense said that some areas saw 600 mm (nearly 24 inches) of rainfall within 24 hours. Credit: Sao Paulo State Government via Storyful
