Austin Police Say Cars Damaged, Officer Injured in 'Reckless' Street Racing Incidents

Police in Austin, Texas, said they were investigating a number of “reckless” street racing incidents in the city on February 18 in which a police officer was injured and several patrol cars damaged.

Video by Emily Young shows what she called a “street takeover”, or sideshow. Young told Storyful the gathering took place around nine o’clock and lasted for at least 30 minutes before police intervened.

“There were cars driving on the other side of the road, people throwing fireworks at police vehicles, and hundreds of cars held up in gridlock unable to get through,” Young said.

The Austin Police Department said “unlawful gatherings and reckless driving creates a dangerous environment and unnecessary risks for everyone.” Credit: Emily Young via Storyful
