Astroworld Death Toll Climbs to 9 After College Student Succumbs to Injuries

A ninth person has died in connection to the tragedy at Travis Scott’s Astroworld music festival in Houston, as a 22-year-old woman died Thursday after being in intensive care.

Bharti Shahani, a Texas A&M University senior, “lost her battle from the horrific, horrific injuries that she sustained,” an attorney for Shahani’s family James Lassiter told press on Thursday (via the Washington Post).

Shahani had been in the ICU at Houston Methodist Hospital since the concert on Friday.

“This was a monumental travesty from start to finish,” Lassiter said of the Astroworld festival. “From the performer down to the ticket sales, everyone gets an ‘F.’ It failed at every level.”

A fundraiser on GoFundMe set up by Shahani’s older sister in order to pay for medical expenses has since Tuesday raised over $58,000.

A crowd surge during Scott’s headlining performance caused a panic and left some people trampled or with cardiac arrest. The dead included teens who were just 14 and 16 and others up to age 27, and 9-year-old who remains in critical condition was among the 25 hospitalized after the concert.

Travis Scott earlier Thursday issued a statement saying that he was “distraught” by the ongoing situation and is trying to connect with other families to provide aid.

Scott has also said that he is refunding all attendees of the festival and even canceled another recent upcoming performance at a similar music festival in Las Vegas.

“Over the last week, Travis Scott and his team have been actively exploring routes of connection with each and every family affected by the tragedy through the appropriate liaisons. He is distraught by the situation and desperately wishes to share his condolences and provide aid to them as soon as possible, but wants to remain respectful of each family’s wishes on how they’d best like to be connected,” Scott said in a statement. “To those families who would like to reach out directly to his team, please send an email to the below address where we will have a team on hand to assist. AW21information@gmail.com.”
