Aston Villa boss Unai Emery is reportedly giving serious thought to a move for a popular former star amid claims he will be made available for transfer by his current club in 2023.
The Spaniard is the man trusted by Villa’s ambitious owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris to get the club upwardly mobile. And they called time on the reign of Steven Gerrard after failing to see any evidence of progress during his year in charge.
As a result, Emery will be provided with funds to help steer the club into the upper reaches of the Premier League. And the Villa boss is already being tipped to launch several raids on LaLiga with a number of players in his sights. Indeed, he’s is being linked with a move for Villarreal attacker Nicolas Jackson to kick off the January window in style.
There could also be some outgoings too. Emery is reportedly ready to move Philippe Coutinho on after his underwhelming form since making the move permanent. The signing of Jackson could well spell bad news for the Brazilian.
But it is in attack where Villa and Emery look likely to be most busy.
One man who has benefited from Emery’s appointment is Danny Ings. The Villa striker has four goals in last five games, including a double in their 2-1 win at Brighton.
Emery, though, is seemingly looking at more additions with Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marcus Thuram among those being watched.
However, competition is fierce for the four-times capped France striker. And clubs further up the food chain than Villa – like Tottenham, Arsenal, Juventus and Inter Milan – are also among his suitors.
Villa linked with deal to re-sign Tammy Abraham
As a result, reports in Italy claim Villa are ready to turn their attentions towards Roma striker Tammy Abraham.
He enjoyed a fantastic first season in Serie A, scoring 27 times in 53 games as Jose Mourinho’s side won the maiden Europa Conference League.
But this season has been a totally different story with the goals drying up. As a result, the 25-year-old lost his place in the England squad ahead of the 2022 World Cup.
Indeed, with just four goals in 20 games, Abraham has found himself the subject of criticism from Mourinho.
That has led to reports suggesting Roma are ready to cash in on Abraham should a suitable offer come along.
Now, as per il Corriere dello Sport’s print edition (19/11/22), Villa are among his admirers and are considering a bit.
Striker considering his Roma future
They write that Mourinho’s criticisms over Abraham have led Abraham to consider his own future. And knowing he has admirers back in the Premier League, a return in January cannot be ruled out.
Abraham is, of course, a player that Villa know well. He starred for the club during a spell on loan in the 2018/19 season. Scoring 26 times in 40 appearances, Abraham was a huge player for Dean Smith as they secured promotion via the play-offs.
And if they can get a deal done, he is certainly someone who understands what it means to be Villa.
However, any deal is more likely in the summer rather than in January. That’s with il Corriere reporting that Roma looking to keep their squad intact for the remainder of the 2022/23 season.
Abraham has a £67m buy-back clause in his deal that Chelsea can activate in summer 2023. As such, they would be looking for a hefty fee for the striker were they to cash in.
That clause currently looks ambitious given his recent struggles. However, any deal would shatter Villa’s transfer record which currently stands at the £33m paid to Norwich for Emiliano Buendia.
