Aston Villa have completed the signing of exciting Colombia international Jhon Duran from Chicago Fire, the Premier League club have announced.
Villa agreed a reported £14.75m deal with the Major League Soccer franchise for the 19-year-old striker last week, in a move that has got the Villa Park faithful very excited.
Duran scored eight goals in 22 MLS appearances for the Fire last season and already has three international caps to his name, despite being just 19 years old.
The striker becomes Unai Emery’s second signing of the January transfer window, following the arrival of full-back Alex Moreno from Real Betis.
A club statement read: “Aston Villa is delighted to confirm Jhon Duran has completed a permanent transfer from Chicago Fire for an undisclosed fee.”
Duran is hoping to make his mark at the club quickly, too. Speaking to Villa TV, he said: “I have all the desire in the world. Lots of desire to work hard, give everything to the team and win. I’m hoping I can play soon.
“I’m a player that plays with a lot of passion who is dedicated to the team and a player that really wants to win always.
“I know it’s the most important league in the world. It’s the best league in the world, and I have all the desire in the world to get on the pitch and score that first goal.”
Duran could become one of Europe’s best as Villa seal major coup
Indeed, Duran could prove to be a fantastic signing for Villa as he is touted to be one of the most promising young centre-forwards in the world.
As mentioned, playing for Chicago Fire in the MLS this season, the Colombia international scored an impressive eight goals and made five assists in 27 league appearances, giving him an average of 0.48 goal contributions per game.
His good form garnered interest from the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool this month, so it was a major coup for Villa to get a deal over the line.
Duran has already made three appearances for the Colombia national team and only narrowly missed out on the World Cup squad, so moving to the Premier League offers him a real chance to impress at the highest level and put himself firmly in Nestor Lorenzo’s plans.
For Villa, the youngster could end up playing a key role this season. Danny Ings recently left the Clarets to join West Ham and while Ollie Watkins is still expected to be Emery’s first choice in the striker position, there’s no reason why Duran couldn’t break into his starting XI with some good performances.
If Duran can live up to his sky-high potential and perform in the Premier League, he could prove to be a phenomenal signing for the Villains
