Ash Cloud From Forest Fire Looms Over Resort on Spain's Costa Del Sol

Clouds of ash hanged over towns on Spain’s south coast on Wednesday, June 8, as a forest fire that broke out about 10 miles north, in the mountainous Pujerra area, continued to burn woodland and edged closer to the more populated coastline.

British tourist Charlotte Albutt shot this video as the cloud appeared overhead over the coastal resort community of Isdabe, close to Estepona and Marbella on Spain’s Costa del Sol.

Albutt told Storyful it was a “scary moment,” and on Twitter wrote that “small pieces of ash” were dropping from the sky.

Up to 3,000 people were evacuated from the area surrounding Pujerra in the night of June 8, according to local media.

The Forest Fire Extinction Service of Andalucia (INFOCA) on Thursday said the fire had affected about 2,150 hectares of forest area with “varying degrees of affection.”

Three firefighters were injured trying to contain the blaze, INFOCA said on Thursday. Two had been discharged, but the third sustained burns on 10 percent of his body and had been transferred to a regional hospital, they said. Credit: Charlotte Albutt via Storyful
