Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman has told the Gunners to complete a shock swoop for Portugal international Cristiano Ronaldo, following his Manchester United departure.

Ronaldo is a free agent after his Man Utd contract was terminated by mutual consent. According to 90Min, he was so desperate to leave Old Trafford he walked away from the remaining £15m he could have received as part of his contract.

Ronaldo was immediately linked with potential moves to Chelsea and Newcastle. This is because they are some of the only clubs in Europe who can afford his colossal wages.

However, Newcastle have distanced themselves from signing him. Eddie Howe is in charge of a long-term project and would rather bring in a younger attacker.

Chelsea, meanwhile, look set to reject Ronaldo as well. The Blues have ‘gone cold’ on the 37-year-old, according to Thursday’s Transfer Gossip.

Ronaldo could yet secure a transfer to another Premier League team once the World Cup ends, though.

Seaman has suggested Arsenal pursue him, as he would be ‘perfect’ for Mikel Arteta. The former shot-stopper also said he was left ‘shocked’ by how poor Man Utd’s facilities were, as Ronaldo revealed.

“Ronaldo is far from done and he would be perfect for Arsenal,” Seaman said during an appearance from TalkTV (via Metro).

David Seaman jumps to Cristiano Ronaldo defence

“I would applaud him [for the interview] because he’s obviously talking the truth. A lot of the stuff he came out with, is not stuff we haven’t heard.

“We have heard a lot of other experienced players moaning and criticising Man United for the way the ground is and the training.

“That shocked me and that shouldn’t be happening. He’s been all around the world and seen how everywhere has progressed and he comes back to his beloved Man United and nothing has changed.

“There was a lot of stuff in the interview that I didn’t know about the way he had been treated.”

It would be an incredible turn of events if Ronaldo went to Arsenal. He is viewed by fans as a legend at Man Utd, even after his bombshell interview with Piers Morgan.

So moving to a big rival like Arsenal would be a controversial move, and it could ruin his relationship with the Man Utd faithful.

But there are big doubts over whether Arsenal would sign the former Real Madrid ace. They don’t seem to need a centre-forward after landing Gabriel Jesus from Man City in the summer.

And Jesus has been a great signing, so Arsenal chiefs probably wouldn’t sanction a move for another goalscorer.

Plus, Arteta is creating a brilliant young squad in north London. Most of his first-team players aren’t over the age of 25. So landing a veteran player like Ronaldo would be a major surprise.

Another factor to consider is Ronaldo’s wage demands. At Man Utd, he took home an eye-watering £480,000 a week.

Arsenal’s top earner, in contrast, is Jesus on £256k every seven days. This means Arsenal would have to break their wage structure to take Ronaldo to the Emirates. Sporting director Edu is highly unlikely to sanction this.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has told Arsenal why they should capture a ‘fantastic’ Serie A midfielder.
