Arsenal are reportedly keen on signing exciting Ajax right-back Devyne Rensch, who Liverpool want as an understudy to Trent Alexander-Arnold.

A lot of areas of the Gunners squad have largely performed very well this season. Indeed, they wouldn’t be top of the league – though that spot is in jeopardy from Manchester City – if it wasn’t for people pulling their weight.

The defence has mostly been in good nick – though the last few games have seen them falter, with William Saliba a big miss through injury.

The midfield has been in great form, particularly Martin Odegaard, who has scored 12 goals and assisted seven in all competitions.

The main positive has been the attack. Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli have been two of the Premier League’s brightest sparks this season; the pair have been directly involved in 46 league goals between them.

New signing Gabriel Jesus has also been a massive addition to the side. The forward has scored nine goals and provided six assists, despite having missed a good chunk of the season through injury.

While the progression from a fifth-placed finish to being title contenders is not all down to new signings, freshening up certainly helps to become competitive, or stay competitive following success.

As such, the Gunners will have their eye on how they can maintain their strength next season following their recent progress.

Arsenal identify Rensch as quality addition

Mikel Arteta has seemingly identified a great fit for the side, who’ll freshen things up at the back. Foot Mercato reports Arsenal are ‘closely following’ Ajax right-back Rensch.

The 20-year-old has so far played 87 times for the Eredivisie side. He’s scored seven times and provided five assists in those appearances.

Rensch has become an important member of the side this season. Indeed, he’s has started in all 22 of his league appearances this term, missing out through injury on a few occasions.

It’s clear to see from his impact how exciting a player he is now and could continue to be going forwards. As such, interest from Arsenal makes sense.

Gunners could spoil Liverpool plans

Arteta’s side are not the only Premier League outfit that see Rensch as a good addition to their squad. Foot Mercato suggests Brighton are also in the mix.

What’s more, Liverpool have previously been touted with interest, with the Dutchman potentially offering competition for Alexander-Arnold at the back. It’s not difficult to see why the Reds would want to give him a kick up the backside.

He’s been a shadow of his former self for much of this season. Famed for his ability to assist teammates, he’d done so in the league just twice before April.

He has since upped his levels, assisting five times in the space of four games during the month. Still, Liverpool won’t want him to get complacent, so an understudy that will push him seems a good addition.

The presence of Arsenal puts those plans in jeopardy. A move to the Emirates might seem a better one for Rensch for a number of reasons. Firstly, that they’re contending for a title, and are a young team that should only get better.

Furthermore, Ben White has been operating at right-back this season. While he’s done a stellar job, he’s primarily a centre-back, so Rensch could see the move as a good opportunity to usurp him.

If he was to do well, there’s a good chance Arteta sees an opportunity to move White back to the centre and keep Rensch on the right full-time.
