Mikel Arteta has made an elite Juventus forward his ‘number one objective’ for the summer window, and why the previously untouchable Liverpool target could be on the move has been revealed by a report.
A key objective in the January window at the Emirates was to lighten the load on the club’s star wingers. Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka have been nothing short of sensational, but Arteta is understood to be wary about overburdening the young pair.
The end result was a £27m swoop for Brighton’s Leandro Trossard once Chelsea hijacked their move for Mykhailo Mudryk. The Belgian made his debut in the 3-2 victory over Man Utd on Sunday when replacing Gabriel Martinelli in the 82nd minute.
However, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato, Arteta has fixed his gaze on an even higher profile addition come the summer.
They report Arsenal hope to celebrate their first league title since 2004 by quickly moving for Juventus ace, Federico Chiesa.
The 25-year-old was signed outright for around £34m in May of last year following a successful two-year loan from Fiorentina.
Cheisa has been eased back into the mix this season upon returning from an ACL injury that robbed 10 months of his career. But despite his tentative displays thus far, he remains one of the brightest lights in all of Italian football.
The right-footer has bagged 19 goals and 16 assists while in Turin. He’s been a regular for his country since debuting in 2018, racking up 40 appearances over the subsequent five years.
Calciomercato recently put Liverpool in the frame with Jurgen Klopp reportedly keen on signing competition for Mohamed Salah.
The Egyptian isn’t alone in dropping his levels at Anfield this season, but isn’t getting any younger now aged 30.
Chiesa is understood to be valued at €60m (approx. £53m), though up until now, the chances of Juve selling their golden boy were slim.
Juventus stance on Chiesa could shift
However, the Turin club have been handed a 15-point deduction due to alleged financial irregularities and false accounting with regards to historic transfer dealings.
As such, they now look certain to miss out on Champions League qualification, though Juventus are in the process of appealing the decision. If the deduction stands, they currently lay a whopping 14 points outside of the top four in Serie A.
With Juve likely to miss out on the riches of UCL football, a summer fire-sale is being tipped.
Real Madrid are credited with interest in Chiesa, but it’s Arsenal who are ‘fully registered’ in the race.
The Italian outlet clearly rate Chiesa extremely highly, adding his arrival in north London could allow Arsenal to ‘establish itself permanently as a superpower of British and perhaps European football.’
Cheisa can play literally anywhere in a front line and his versatility could be key to helping the Gunners maintain their sky high standards in both the Premier League and Champions League.
His arrival would also ensure Arteta can call upon two high calibre options in each of the four attacking positions he fields.
A luxury like that has generally only been enjoyed by Man City and Liverpool to a lesser extent in recent years.
