Arsenal, Liverpool receive transfer boost as Fabrizio Romano predicts ‘big fight’ for midfielder

Reported Arsenal and Liverpool target Alexis Mac Allister would ‘love’ to leave Brighton for a ‘top club’, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Mac Allister joined the Premier League club from Argentinos Juniors in 2018.

The 24-year-old has particularly impressed over the last year and played a major part in Argentina’s World Cup win in December.

It is no surprise to see Premier League giants take an interest in signing Mac Allister – who is valued at €42million by Transfermarkt, making him Brighton’s most valuable asset having been worth €10m in December 2021.

His World Cup exploits will have done him, and Brighton, no harm whatsoever. Given the Seagulls’ track record of receiving huge fees for their players, he will cost a pretty penny should he move on.

Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea have all been linked with Mac Allister in recent months.

The Daily Star reported over the weekend that City are ‘hot on the heels’ of the midfielder with Brighton looking to receive around £70m.

Mac Allister’s father has said his son “loves” the south coast club “very much”, though he has admitted that “there will be possibilities” of a summer transfer.

While the player’s dad is probably the best source out there, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano is not far behind in that respect.

Writing in his CaughtOffside column, Romano has predicted a “big fight to sign” Mac Allister this summer.

The transfer expert wrote: ‘I’m told Alexis Mac Allister has chances to leave in the summer as he’d love a top club move, but Brighton guarantee they’ve not fixed a price tag yet and I guess is going to be another big fight to sign Brighton star in the summer.’

Chelsea have spent an absolute fortune over the previous two transfer windows, but are still believed to be in the market for another midfielder and striker.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are in dire need of midfield recruits and have identified Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham as their top summer target.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are expected to bring in at least two midfielders in the summer transfer window and Mac Allister is certainly a profile that would suit them.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta could do with another midfielder as well. Mac Allister would be quite interesting in Granit Xhaka’s position, I feel.

Discussing his future at the Amex, Mac Allister told Sky Sports that he would happily “retire now” having won the World Cup.

The 24-year-old said: “If a good offer comes for the club and for me then we will make a decision but I like to live in the present and I am really happy here at Brighton.

“The dream was to win the World Cup and I have done it. I could retire now. But I still enjoy playing football.”

Brighton are doing an incredible job of signing unknown quantities, bringing them into the first team at the right time, and developing them into top drawer footballers.

Japanese winger Kaoru Mitoma, Ecuadorian midfielder Moises Caicedo and Mac Allister himself are three players you would expect to leave Brighton for big money in the future, and the Argentine loves the “amazing job” the Seagulls are doing in that department.

“There are not many players who come here straight from Ecuador, Argentina or Japan,” the Arsenal target added.

“But Brighton do an amazing job and then it is up to the players to show what they can do. Everyone knows how good Mitoma and Caicedo are now.”
