Arsenal have last laugh as Fabrizio Romano details ‘smart’ snare after Chelsea hijack
Fabrizio Romano has coined the Arsenal deal for Leandro Trossard “smart” in a “difficult moment” after Chelsea hijacked another of their signings.
The Gunners’ recruitment over the past few seasons has been very good. Indeed, you need to look no further than first-team regulars Martin Odegaard and Ben White to see how successful recent additions have been.
The pair are two of the first names on the teamsheet – testament to the club’s top recruitment.
This season’s additions have allowed Mikel Arteta’s side to take a step up. Last season, the Emirates outfit finished second in the league.
They currently sit five points clear of last season’s title-winners Manchester City in top spot. Eight men have walked through the door between the start of the summer window and the end of January.
The likes of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus – both bought in the summer – have been some of the best additions. The latter was directly involved in 11 goals in 15 Premier League games before being struck down with an injury.
January saw Jakub Kiwior, Jorginho and Trossard join the club. Jorginho has been a solid addition to the midfield after joining from Chelsea.
However, it’s Trossard who has had the best impact. The former Brighton man has been tasked with leading the line of late – with injuries to strikers hindering the squad – and has played very well away from his normal position.
Romano hails ‘smart’ Trossard signing
The forward has scored once and assisted five times in nine league games so far. What’s more, all five of those assists have come in the four games he has been deputising up top.
Romano has hailed Arsenal for their business in snapping Trossard up in January.
“Arsenal were hugely impressive again yesterday, and Leandro Trossard in particular with three assists in the first half against Fulham – a new Premier League record,” he told Caught Offside.
“In my opinion, it’s such a smart, good signing by Arsenal. I didn’t have any doubt to be honest.
“He’s a serious player, Premier League proven, wanted by Edu and Arteta in the most difficult moment after missing out on Mykhaylo Mudryk. Arsenal have been fast and smart, this makes the difference on the market.”
Arsenal have last laugh over Chelsea
The Gunners’ pursuit of Mudryk was well documented in January. Indeed, ahead of the window, the Ukrainian winger appeared to be Arteta’s main target.
However, when it seemed the Gunners were ready to pull the trigger on the deal, Chelsea swooped.
Indeed, the deal for Mudryk will total £88.5million with add-ons. However, Arsenal paid a lot less than that – in the region of £27million – to take Trossard on board.
The Belgian has been a lot more impactful than the Chelsea new boy, too. Indeed, Mudryk has been directly involved in just one goal for the Blues in seven games so far, which is five less than Trossard has had a hand in.
The difference in price, coupled with the difference in output so far, means Arsenal have had the last laugh.
