Chelsea have successfully hijacked the deal for Mykhaylo Mudryk to join Arsenal, with the Shakhtar Donetsk winger now agreeing personal terms with the Blues instead.

Arsenal are long-term admirers of Mudryk and they have been gaining confidence that they can get their man in the coming days. They have put together a €95million (£84.2million) package in order to tempt Shakhtar into a sale after direct talks at the club’s training camp.

But Fabrizio Romano revealed on Saturday afternoon that Chelsea had followed suit by travelling to present an official bid to Shakhtar. Their proposal would be bigger than Arsenal’s.

The story is quickly developing. Now, various sources are indicating that Chelsea are on the verge of beating Arsenal to Mudryk’s signature.

The Athletic has now provided the update that Chelsea have reached an agreement with Shakhtar to sign Mudryk. They will be paying €70million (£62million) up front and have offered up to €40million (£35million) more in add-ons.

In total, their package could come to €110million (£97.5million), which surpasses the nine-figure barrier in euros that Shakhtar were holding out for.

Romano has also reported that a deal has been agreed between the two clubs.

In his earlier update, he reminded that Mudryk has been holding out for a move to Arsenal. Therefore, Chelsea would have to be convincing in their negotiations with him.

But The Athletic indicates that they have been, since Mudryk is not only described as being “open” to joining Chelsea, but is said to have “agreed” personal terms.

Once his move goes through, he will become a Chelsea player on a seven-and-a-half-year contract. The length of his deal would be the same as the one recently signed by incoming defender, Benoit Badiashile.

Graham Potter has pushed for Chelsea to sign Mudryk, according to the report. Soon, he could have the winger at his disposal.

An update from Romano has revealed that the 22-year-old will fly to London in the coming hours. Then, he will be able to undergo his medical before putting pen to paper on his Chelsea contract.

Mykhaylo Mudryk signing to continue Chelsea focus on youth

Mudryk could therefore become Chelsea’s fifth signing of the January transfer window. As well as Badiashile, they have brought in David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos and Joao Felix.

Under the ownership of Todd Boehly, they have been targeting lots of young players. Mudryk’s potential arrival will represent a continuation of that strategy.

And the huge commitment they are preparing by contracting him until 2030 shows they believe he can be a big part of their future.

Chelsea need new ideas in attack, which has already prompted them to look at Fofana and Felix. No side currently in the top half of the Premier League has scored fewer goals than them this season.

As a left winger, Mudryk can provide support for some of their existing attackers. Adding him to the mix will only increase rumours about some players in similar territory leaving, though.
