The last of nine critically endangered Rothschild’s giraffes have been floated to safety from a flooded island in Kenya, a conservation group said on April 12.The last giraffes to catch the boat to safety were a mother, Ngarikoni, and her calf Noelle, the charity Save Giraffes Now said.Video from the Northern Rangelands Trust shows Ngarikoni being tranquilized and caught by conservationists before being transported across Lake Baringo on a custom-built barge to a 4,400-acre sanctuary on the mainland. The video also shows Noelle on the same barge, with the giraffes joining the others at their new mainland sanctuary. The rescue completed a 15-month project to rescue giraffes from a peninsula that was turned by flooding into a “disappearing” island, Save Giraffes Now said.
