Armed men kill four people including former mayor in violent attack in Mexico

Former mayor Refugio "Cuco" Amaro was killed during a suspected gangland shootout in Mexico on Thursday evening (September 1). Footage captured the panic following the deadly attack by armed men during a football match in a sports complex in the Aquiles Serdan neighbourhood of Yecapixtla town, Morelos state. Authorities confirmed at least 10 people were injured and four were killed, including former Yecapixtla mayor Refugio "Cuco" Amaro Luna, 57, who later succumbed to his wounds at the hospital. Among the injured was another politician, Alberto Franco - a former municipal president candidate for Atlatlahucan City in the same state. Police rushed the shooting victims to nearby hospitals while the State Public Security Commission said it has deployed officers to hunt for the alleged suspects who are believed to have escaped in vans. Local media reported that the shooting was linked to gangland crime in the notoriously violent North American country.
