An armed man was shot by an Ontario Provincial Police officer in Thessalon Friday night, after a call about a disturbance, according to the province's Special Investigations Unit.

Police responded to a disturbance call near Ontario and Frances streets around 7:15 p.m., and confronted a man armed with "an edged weapon," reads a SIU release from Saturday.

An officer discharged a conducted energy weapon at the man, after which there was an "interaction" and an officer shot the man with his firearm.

The 35-year-old man was arrested and taken to a hospital in Sudbury, where he is in stable condition, says the release.

The SIU is now investigating the shooting.

Officers are asking anyone who may have information on the incident, including photos or video, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or on their website.
